About a year ago, Kristy and Marea Blue decided somewhat arbitrarily that they wanted to take a trip to South America. They didn’t know much about South America, as evidenced by their cheerful assertion that they were going to visit an entire continent. More thorough research indicated that this South America place was pretty big, and what seemed like digestible inch-long distances on their map were actually thirty hour bus rides. Undeterred, they decided to lengthen their trip to six months, and narrow their destination to three countries: Peru, Chile and Argentina.

The Blues are easily influenced by enthusiastic friends, so while they hope to stick to the plan (two months in each of the aforementioned countries), Columbia, Ecuador and Bolivia are not off the table. Other than that, they are trying to avoid too much structure. An important goal of the trip is to leave the door open to experiences that might present themselves. A host with a great recommendation, a cheap ticket, a charismatic stranger with promises of riches (jokes)…should not be passed up because of a schedule. While this generally gives Marea, who enjoys a predictable, regimented day, heart palpitations, Kristy is energized by it and will help Marea practice her spontaneity. In return, Marea will make sure that Kristy’s trusting, Midwestern nature isn’t exploited, and that they always have a place to sleep.

Hopefully this blog is an entertaining chronicle of their adventures as they navigate South America equipped with Marea’s three unremarkable years of high school Spanish and Kristy’s smile.
